A portable storage unit provides you with the ability to pack your belongings yourself at your own pace. However, you will be responsible with how your things are packed, which means you’ll want to take every precaution to ensure that your boxes, furniture, and appliances are safely and securely loaded into your portable storage unit. The following are a few tips that will help you to load your unit in the most effective and secure way possible.
Choosing the Right Sized Unit
The last thing you want to do is realize you don’t have enough space to store all of your possessions. There are typically three sizes of portable storage units: small, medium, and large. A small-sized unit should be suitable for a single room, a medium-sized unit can usually fit between two and three rooms, and a large unit is perfect for three to four rooms.
Before Loading the Portable Storage Unit
Before you begin loading, you’re going to want to prepare your belongings. This means packing smaller items into boxes, making sure that you don’t fill up huge boxes with heavy items. For smaller heavy items, use smaller boxes so that they are easy to lift. For lighter items, use larger boxes. Make sure that you pack these boxes tightly so that your items don’t shift inside – you can use bubble wrap or newspaper to fill up the empty spaces. Label every box as well so that unpacking doesn’t become a hassle.
If any of your furniture can be taken apart, do so. This will help you to save space within the portable storage unit and also reduce the risk of damaging these components. Pick up some stretch wrap and use it to cover all of your upholstered furniture. This will help protect the upholstery from getting dirt and from getting damaged by other items stored in the unit.
Loading the Portable Storage Unit
Once you are ready to begin loading your portable storage unit, we recommend that you rent a dolly to make it easier for you to move larger pieces of furniture from your home into the unit. Not only will the loading process go much faster, but you also reduce the risk of injuring yourself while carrying heavy furniture or boxes.
Once you’ve picked up a dolly, begin loading the heaviest items into the unit first. These items can include couches, sofa chairs, refrigerators, washers, and dryers, just to name a few. Weight distribution is important, so if you set a heavy item on the right side of the unit, you should set a heavy item on the left side as well. This will help to keep the weight in the unit balanced. Don’t forget to pack upwards as well – if there’s space above that dryer, use it for some of your boxes. When you begin loading up boxes, make sure that you place the heaviest boxes at the bottom of the unit and stack progressively lighter boxes on top. We suggest picking up moving blankets to help fill up the empty spaces between your furniture, appliances, and boxes as well. This will help add another layer of protection and will help keep your things from shifting within the unit.
Use moving bands to tie down sections of space to further protect your belongings from shifting and damaging each other. Mattresses are a great way to create barriers between sections and keep smaller boxes blocked off.
These are just a few tips that you should keep in mind so that you can load up your portable storage unit in a safe, secure, and efficient manner.
