Horizontal Lift interviewed iCan Storage on their success as a mobile self storage business and the market’s current state.
What strengths does your business build upon?
Our business is funded with capital from established businesses. This gives us considerable liquidity and freedom to make investments in the business as needed. We are also a family-operated business. We are a close team, and each member brings skills in sales, logistics, office management, and customer service to the table to benefit our customers.
We also have solid relationships with local businesses who help promote our operations. Coupled with the dense population base of median income homeowners and renters in the region, we have a solid market to expand within. Nationwide, 1 in 10 people rent a storage unit at any given time, and those numbers are reflective of the market within our area.
What’s the greatest opportunity in your view?
Right now, PODS is the market leader. They have the name recognition, even though other players, such as GoMinis, Packrat, and Eagle, are rapidly gaining on them. PODS paved the way for market acceptance, and right now there is an opportunity for smaller businesses to capitalize on this and grab a larger share of a market that is rapidly emerging.
Why did you build a mobile self storage business?
Self storage in our area is strong. However, the initial investment in real estate and buildings is considerable. The entry costs into the traditional storage market are prohibitive. Conversely, mobile storage is less expensive to start up and make operational. It’s also more flexible, which gives us greater ability to evolve and adjust our operations as market needs change down the road.
How do you move containers from Point A to Point B and places in-between?
We utilize the Horizontal Lift, and a PSU mule to get our client’s possessions where they need to go. This gives us great flexibility in the items we can safely transport for our clients. We can haul everything from white box containers to construction site containers without any difficulty or risk of damage to the contents.
Moreover, the HLC is robust and sturdy. It does not require a trailer, which makes delivery a breeze. It can be loaded and unloaded in minutes by a single operator. I’ve met with Jack and am impressed with the professionalism of his team and their capabilities.
We use USC containers. The customer service provided to us by Sam Mishkin has been phenomenal. He has helped us anticipate problems before they occur and develop solutions that will allow our business to grow. He’s also been an invaluable resource of connections and information that our team greatly appreciates.
What areas do you service?
Our local delivery services all of the tri-state metropolitan area including Rockland, Orange, Sullivan, Dutchess, and Putnam counties. That means in Jersey we’ll go to Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Hudson, Union, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset—all the counties from Sussex to Cape May, all in a day’s work. For longer-distance moves, yes—we head down the east coast and into the mid-west.
Do you offer long distance moves?
